Rajkot is all set to get a New Year gift– two mega flyovers, one on 150-feet Ring Road and the second on the Gondal-Mavdi Road under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission. The Gujarat State Urban Development gave the go ahead for the Gondal-Mavdi overbridge on Monday. The proposal will now be forwarded to the Center and work is likely to begin later this year. Each project is estimated to cost over Rs 25 crore. The Rajkot Municipal Corporation proposed to construct an overbridge on railway crossings —one on Gondal Road and the other on Mavdi Road— keeping in view the fact that these crossings needed to be closed 12 times , leading to traffic congestion.
The flyover starting from Raiya Road Telephone Exchange will run up to Amin Marg cross-section. It will be open for the traffic of the two highways, Gondal to Jamnagar, whereas the city commuters will follow the path from under the flyover at junction with University Road at Indira Circle and at the junction with Kalawad Road at KKV circle. The RMC officials said it would be a four-lane flyover suitable for all types of vehicle.
The industrial area in south of Rajkot city coupled with the ongoing developmental work in the west has made Gondal (south) and Mavdi (west) roads two of the busiest in the city. With the same Gondal road connecting the city to National Highway 8B, traffic congestion on this road, which has two railway crossings, has become a nightmare for commuters.
Traffic cops in Gujarat took to novel policing by handing out roses to the violators in a bid to stir their conscience.
The move is inspired by a Bollywood movie, which many say has revived memories of the apostle of peace, Mahatma Gandhi.
“We decided that we will not fine them and rather gave them roses to teach them and guide them. Some of them were not wearing the helmets, or using seat belts,” said Balwant Jadeja, head of Rajkot traffic police.
In the Bollywood movie Lage Raho Munnabhai, an underworld don (Sanjay Dutt) after his meeting with Mahatma Gandhis spirit starts emulating his pacifist ideals. After learning Gandhiji’s teachings on non-violence, the gangster sends flowers to a corrupt real estate dealer, to cure him of the “disease”.
“When I was caught without helmet, police gave me a rose and told that what I are doing is wrong,” said Meghal, a traffic violator.
The practice shown in the film Munnabhai is called “Gandhigiri” or the use of moral force to assert a viewpoint as opposed to “dadagiri” or use of brutal force.
Not long ago, most machine tool companies in India preferred importing high-speed computer numeric control (CNC) machines — CNC machines are used to manufacture auto tools and other spare parts for industrial sectors — from European nations. Until, a small Rajkot-based company decided to turn the industry on its head.
In 2001, Jyoti CNC launched an indigenously developed high-speed CNC machine with dynamic efficiency levels at half the cost of imported European machines. Soon, Indian machine tool makers, already in the midst of an industrial boom, were lapping up these machines.
In six years, Jyoti CNC has managed to have Kadvani Forging, CIM Tools, VCube Forge, MacPower CNC, Shanti Machine Tools, and several avionics tool companies on its list of clients. The company’s revenues soared from Rs 6 crore in 2001 to Rs 120 (as on March 31, 2006) and it is expected to touch Rs 200 crore this fiscal.
Two decades ago, the company’s CEO, Parakramsinh Jadeja started a small business with a paltry Rs 100. Then 19, Jadeja, rented a lathe machine to carry out job-works for local auto component makers — Rajkot is a hub for precision engineering and auto components manufacturing. Having studied till higher secondary, he knew little about machines or technology but always believed he could make a difference.
Here in the race course ground it was a sheer show of strength of rebels of BJP. Estimates of the crowd ranges from 1.5 lakh to three lakh. Speaker after speaker blasted Narendra Modi government for issues ranging from the plight of farmers to the growing unemployment.
Patel leaders under the banner of Sardar Patel Utkarsh Sewa passed a resolution to oust Chief Minister Narendra Modi in elections this year. The rally was headed by Vasant Gajera, brother of the rebel MLA Dhiru Gajera.
Prominent among the speakers were two rebel MPs Dr. Vallabh Kathiria representing Rajkot and Soma Ganda from Surendranagar constituency. The two challenged the BJP leadership to take action against them for attending the meeting and raising voice of their conscience.
Bavku Ugadh, Balu Tanti and Gordhan Zhadafia and several others spoke against Modi and his government. They said that they would see that Modi and his coterie was defeated in the Assembly elections.
Interestingly, state administration tried its best to prevent people from attending the rally.
